Rock Moments

“I call to remembrance my song in the night...”  Psalm 77:6

I love mountain streams. Rushing waters making gurgling sounds as they move freely over or around rocks and stones. The sound the water makes seems to draw us in and send us into a peaceful trance of calm and relaxation.

Apparently, there must be a lot of people who enjoy the sounds of water babbling in streams, because there are always several water settings on sound machines. The soothing sound of babbling waters is so peaceful and calming.

As I thought about it though, I realized that the water isn’t making that noise by freely flowing along, minding its own business. No, the beautiful, relaxing sounds we enjoy hearing so much are caused by obstacles within the water.

What?!

What we hear and enjoy is a result of the obstacles in the water’s path.  Without those obstacles, there would be no sound!

I thought about our lives and all the obstacles we face each day. I wonder if we’d have a song without them? I wonder if we would ever truly enjoy life if we never had an obstacle to face and overcome? How could we have a song to sing if we had no reason to sing?

Obstacles on our path of life provide space and opportunity for our songs of praise to develop.

Many times I’ve heard it said to turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones. Without the obstacles there would be no beauty, no song, and no praise.

So, maybe those hard times, rough moments and difficult days aren’t so bad after all in the grand scheme of things. The noise they add in our lives may not seem calming in the moment either, but without them we’d never realize the beauty and fully appreciate the peace God blesses us with.

Just a little thought to remind us that the rocks of trial and disappointment in life are hidden blessings that contribute to our peace. Just a little different perspective for those rough days which seem to bring us to our knees.

Rocks are good. Obstacles are profitable.  Rocks are ultimately a blessing because God works all things together for our good. We can have calm assurance during the “rock moments” of life because we know, from experience, they won’t take us out, but allow our lives to produce praises to God.

That song of praise we sing in the night is priceless. So are rocks!
